Venetian plastering is decoration, not just a flat surface to paint. Built from many thin coats of fine plaster and burnished by hand, it gives a wall real depth, a soft marble-like movement and a polished sheen that catches the light. Rigby’s Plastering applies Venetian and marble-effect finishes across Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire and Cheshire, usually as a striking feature in a room.

What sets Venetian plaster apart

Everyday plaster is about getting a wall flat and ready to decorate. Venetian plaster is the finish itself. It is worked in fine, thin layers, each one troweled tight and then polished, so the surface builds up subtle variation in tone and a stone-like glow. The result looks and feels like polished marble or natural stone, with a tactile quality a coat of paint cannot give.

That makes it a choice for the places you want to draw the eye: a feature wall, a hallway, a chimney breast or an alcove. With the correct sealing it can also go into a bathroom, standing up to a moisture-laden room while looking far richer than tile or paint.

How the finish is built

Getting a polished plaster right takes patience and a steady hand, and it is where nearly a decade of experience shows. The stages matter:

  • The background is made flat, sound and clean, because every flaw shows through a polished finish.
  • Thin coats of fine plaster are applied and worked, one over another.
  • Each coat is burnished as it firms, drawing out the sheen and the depth.
  • A sealing or wax stage protects the surface and settles the final look.

There is no rushing it. The number of coats depends on the depth and colour you want, and the burnishing between them is what separates a flat approximation from a proper Venetian finish.

Choosing the look and living with it

The colour and the level of sheen are agreed with you before any work begins, from soft and understated to deep and dramatic, and from a gentle satin to a high polish. Because it is applied by hand, every wall is a little different, which is part of its appeal.

Once finished it asks for almost no upkeep. A sealed surface can be wiped gently and keeps its sheen for years, though harsh cleaners are best kept away so the polish is not dulled.

This is one of the specialist finishes Rigby’s offers alongside the everyday plastering and rendering range. Coverage runs across a roughly 30-mile radius from Stoke, taking in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stone and the Cheshire towns. Quotes are free.

Questions

Venetian Plastering: common questions

Is Venetian plaster expensive?

It costs more than standard plastering because it is a hand-applied decorative finish built from several thin coats and burnished by hand. It is usually chosen for feature areas, and each job is quoted free.

Does Venetian plaster crack easily?

Applied over a sound, flat base in thin coats, it is stable and hard-wearing. Most problems come from a poor background or rushing the coats, so the wall is prepared properly before any polished plaster goes on.

Where can Venetian plaster be used?

It works beautifully on feature walls, hallways, fireplaces and alcoves. With the right sealing it can also be used in bathrooms, giving a rich, stone-like finish that copes with a moisture-laden room.

How many coats does it take?

Several thin coats are built up and burnished, which is what creates the depth and movement in the finish. The number depends on the effect wanted, and it is why the work takes longer than a plain skim.

How do I look after a Venetian plaster wall?

Very little upkeep is needed. A sealed finish can be wiped gently, and the surface keeps its sheen for years. Harsh cleaners are best avoided so the polished surface is not dulled.

Is Venetian plaster still in fashion?

It has stayed popular in contemporary interiors for its depth and texture, and it suits both modern and period rooms. As a made-to-order finish it is more about the look you want than a passing trend.
