Why the boarding matters
A skim can only ever be as flat as the board beneath it. If the boards are fixed to an uneven wall, sit proud at the joints or flex when you press them, every one of those faults shows through the finished surface. Taking care at the boarding stage is what stops cracked joints, hollow spots and wavy walls later on. It is the unglamorous part of the job, but it is where a clean, flat result is won or lost.
The ways we board
Different walls call for different methods, and the right one is picked for the job rather than doing everything the same way:
- Dot-and-dab, fixing boards straight onto a masonry wall with adhesive to level out rough brick or block.
- Fixing to timber or metal studwork, with joints staggered and screwed off correctly on new partition walls.
- Overboarding, laying fresh board over a tired ceiling or an old artexed surface instead of pulling it all down.
Each method leaves a clean, even face ready for the finish. Overboarding in particular saves a lot of mess in the older terraces around Longton, Fenton and the wider Potteries, where original ceilings have often had a hard life.
How the work runs
Walls and ceilings are checked and measured, boards are cut around sockets, pipes and openings, and everything is fixed level with the joints set out so no weak line runs across the surface. Where the same job carries on into skimming, the boards are then finished ready to decorate. Where another trade is taking over, the boarding is left tidy and true for them to work from.
The work area is kept clean as the job goes, offcuts are cleared and the room is left workable. Plasterboarding: common questions
What is the difference between plasterboarding and skimming?
Plasterboarding is fixing the boards to the wall or ceiling to form a flat, solid base. Skimming is the thin finish plaster that goes on top afterwards. The board has to be right first, or the skim will only follow its faults.
What is dot-and-dab?
Dot-and-dab is fixing plasterboard straight onto a masonry wall using dabs of adhesive rather than a timber or metal frame. It is quick, it levels out a rough brick or block wall, and it leaves a clean face ready to skim.
Can you board over an old artexed or uneven ceiling?
Yes. Overboarding fixes fresh plasterboard over the top of a tired, cracked or artexed ceiling, which is often quicker and less mess than pulling the old surface down. The new board is then ready for a skim finish.
Do you fix plasterboard to stud walls?
Yes. Boards are screwed to timber or metal studwork with the joints staggered and set correctly, so the wall stays flat and the finished skim has no ridges or weak lines running through it.
Do you skim the boards as well or just fix them?
Both can be done as one job. Many customers want the boards fixed and skimmed ready to decorate, but if another trade is skimming, the boarding can be supplied and fixed on its own to a tidy standard.
What thickness of plasterboard do you use?
It depends on the job. Standard board suits most walls and ceilings, while thicker, denser or moisture-resistant boards are used where sound, fire or a bathroom calls for it. The right board is chosen when the work is quoted.
