Micro cement gives the look of poured concrete without the depth, weight or upheaval of the real thing. It is a thin cement-based coating, applied by hand in layers over a surface you already have, and it has become a favourite in contemporary interiors. Rigby’s Plastering applies micro cement across Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire and Cheshire, on walls, floors and wet areas alike.
What micro cement is and where it works
At only a few millimetres thick, micro cement can go over many existing surfaces rather than replacing them. That opens up finishes that would otherwise mean ripping everything out. It suits a modern kitchen floor, a feature wall, a shower area, a worktop or a staircase, giving a continuous, joint-free surface with a soft, stone-like depth.
Its biggest practical draw is that it goes over tiles. Instead of lifting an old tiled floor or wall, the joints are filled and the surface prepared, and the micro cement is laid straight over the top. That means less mess, less waste and a quicker route to a new look, which owners updating a bathroom or kitchen tend to appreciate.
Preparation is everything
Micro cement is only as good as what it sits on, so the preparation matters more than the top coats. The base is checked to be sound and stable, because any movement underneath can telegraph through such a thin finish. The surface is primed, a reinforcing mesh is bedded in where it is needed, and the coating is then built up in thin layers. Each layer is worked and, once dry, smoothed back before the next.
The final stage is sealing. Several coats of sealer are what make the surface water-resistant and hard-wearing, and give it the finished look, whether that is a flat matt or a little more sheen. In a bathroom or kitchen that sealing stage is done properly, because it is what lets a wall or floor cope with water and daily use.
The finished result
Done well, micro cement gives a calm, continuous surface with subtle variation in tone, the kind of finish that suits the clean lines of a modern interior. Because it is thin, floors barely rise and doors and fittings usually clear without adjustment.
This is specialist work rather than everyday plastering, and it is one of the finishes Rigby’s offers alongside the internal and external range. Coverage runs across a roughly 30-mile radius from Stoke, out to Newcastle-under-Lyme, Congleton and Stafford. Quotes are free and the finish is agreed with you before any work begins.

Questions
Micro Cement: common questions
What is micro cement?
Micro cement is a very thin cement-based coating, only a few millimetres thick, applied by hand over an existing surface. It gives a continuous, poured-concrete look on walls, floors and worktops without joints.
Can micro cement go over tiles?
Yes, that is one of its main advantages. Over sound, well-fixed tiles the joints are filled and prepared first, then the micro cement is applied on top, so there is no need to rip the old surface out.
Is micro cement waterproof enough for a bathroom?
Applied as a full system with the right primer and sealer, it suits bathrooms and wet areas. The sealing coats are what make it water-resistant, so that stage is done thoroughly rather than skipped.
Does micro cement crack?
Over a stable, well-prepared base and with a reinforcing mesh where needed, it resists cracking well. A moving or poorly prepared substrate is the usual cause of problems, so the base is checked first.
What finishes and colours are available?
It comes in a broad range of tones and can be finished smoother or more textured, and matt or with more sheen depending on the sealer. The look is agreed before work starts.
How thick is micro cement and will it raise my floor?
Only a few millimetres, so it barely changes floor height and rarely causes problems with doors or fittings. That thinness is why it can go over an existing floor rather than replacing it.
