What rendering does for a house
External walls take a beating from local weather. Over time old render cracks, bulges, stains green with algae or simply looks tired and dated. Once it cracks, water gets behind it, and the problem only grows through the winter. Fresh render seals the surface again, hides a patchwork of past repairs, and can change the whole character of a plain or dated elevation. It also suits owners wanting to cover old pebbledash or a mixed run of brick and previous coatings under one clean finish, and it is often the quickest way to lift the look of the whole property from the street.
Choosing the right render
There is no single best render. The right one depends on the wall, the look you want and how exposed the property sits. Rigby’s fits several systems and will talk you through them on the quote:

- Monocouche, a one-coat through-colour render with a scraped texture and no painting.
- Traditional sand and cement render, ready to paint in a colour of your choosing.

How the job runs
Old, blown or cracked render is hacked off and the wall made good. Beads are set to give straight edges and clean lines around windows and corners, and reveals are worked in. Access is arranged so the whole elevation can be done in one pass, which keeps the colour and texture even. The render is then built up and finished in the chosen system. Around openings and at ground level is where a render job is won or lost, so that detailing gets proper attention.

Rendering: common questions
How much does it cost to render a house?
It varies with the size of the elevations, access, the render system chosen and how much old render has to come off first. Each property is measured and priced on its own, and quotes are free.
Can you render over old render or pebbledash?
Sometimes, if the existing coat is sound and well stuck. More often the old, blown or cracked render is hacked off first so the new finish has a solid, even background to key into.
Will rendering stop damp?
Fresh render sheds rain and protects the wall, which helps with weather-driven damp. It is not a cure for rising damp or an internal leak, and those causes need sorting on their own first.
How long does render take to cure?
The surface firms up within hours, but full curing runs over several days and depends on the weather. Cold or wet spells slow it down, which is factored into how the job is planned.
Do you repair patches of render or only full walls?
Both. Small areas of cracked or blown render can be cut out and made good, though a whole elevation is often rendered in one pass so the colour and texture stay even across the wall.
Does rendering need scaffolding?
Most full elevations do, so the wall can be worked top to bottom in one go for an even finish. Access is arranged as part of the job and included in the quote.
