Fresh plaster is what turns a rough, patched or tired wall into a flat surface you can decorate straight onto. Rigby’s Plastering handles skimming and full plastering across Stoke-on-Trent and the wider Potteries, from a single ceiling to every room in a renovation.

When a wall needs skimming or plastering

Homeowners tend to call for one of a few reasons. A wall has been stripped of old paper and the surface underneath is uneven. An old artex or textured ceiling wants bringing back to flat. A room has been knocked about during other work and needs tidying before decorating. Or a whole property is being done up and every surface could do with a fresh skim.

Skimming is a thin top coat over a sound existing surface. Full plastering builds up from bare brick, block or new plasterboard, then finishes with the same smooth skim. On the quote, Rigby’s will tell you which of the two your walls actually need rather than assuming the bigger job.

How Rigby’s approaches the work

Nearly a decade on the tools means the unglamorous parts get done properly. Furniture is moved or sheeted, floors are covered, and sockets and skirtings are protected before a single trowel of plaster goes on. The surface is checked, sealed where it needs it, and any hollow or blown patches are cut back so the new finish has something solid to grip.

The skim is then laid and troweled through its stages until it is flat and closed, with no ridges, no trowel lines and crisp internal angles. Ceilings, being the harder job overhead, get the same care as walls. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Longton, Fenton and Stoke often have older backing that wants a little extra attention, while the post-war semis out at Bentilee and Meir usually skim up quickly.

What to expect afterwards

When the plaster goes on it has a slight sheen and a darker tone. As it dries it lightens to a pale, even finish over several days, depending on the room and the weather. Once it has gone fully pale it is ready for a mist coat and then decorating. Rigby’s leaves the room swept, waste bagged and taken away, and the walls ready for the decorator. Painting itself is a separate trade and not something Rigby’s takes on.

Coverage runs across Staffordshire and Cheshire, roughly a 30-mile radius from Stoke, taking in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stone, Crewe and the towns in between. Quotes are free and given straight, with no pushy follow-up.

Questions

Plastering & Skimming: common questions

What is the difference between plastering and skimming?

Skimming is a thin top coat laid over a sound existing wall to bring it flat and smooth. Full plastering builds up from bare brick, block or fresh board first, then finishes with that same smooth skim.

How long does new plaster take to dry before I can paint?

It usually takes several days to go from dark and patchy to an even pale colour, longer in cold or damp rooms. Wait until it is fully pale all over, then a thinned mist coat before normal paint.

Can you skim over an artexed or painted wall?

Often yes. A sound painted wall can be prepared and skimmed, and flat artex can be gone over once checked. Heavily textured or unstable surfaces may need scraping back or boarding first.

How much mess does plastering make?

Less than most people expect. Floors are covered, furniture is moved or sheeted and edges are protected before work starts, and waste is bagged and taken away at the end of the job.

Do you only take on whole houses or single rooms too?

Both. Work ranges from re-skimming one ceiling to plastering every wall in a full renovation, so a single room is just as welcome as a large project.

How much does plastering cost?

It depends on the size of the room, the state of the walls and the amount of preparation needed, so every job is priced individually. Quotes are free and given without pressure.
