Leek is a proper Staffordshire Moorlands market town, and it feels different from the city stock down in the Potteries. The historic centre is full of older stone-built property, terraces and converted commercial premises, much of it inside the Leek Conservation Area. Buildings like these were put up with solid walls that need to breathe. Skim a hard, impermeable finish over that kind of masonry and moisture gets trapped, which leads to blown plaster, salting and damp staining a few winters down the line.
