What dry lining gives you
Instead of skimming a whole wall in wet plaster, dry lining fixes plasterboard and then finishes the joints with tape and jointing compound. Very little moisture goes into the room, so there is far less drying time before you can decorate, and the job runs cleaner. It suits a room that needs to be back in use quickly, a conversion where speed matters, or any space where you would rather not wait days for wet plaster to dry out.
Where insulated board earns its place
The bigger reason people choose dry lining is warmth. Insulated or thermal plasterboard carries a bonded layer of insulation on its back, so lining a cold external wall adds real thermal value. That lifts the surface temperature of the wall, keeps heat in the room and cuts the condensation that beads on cold plaster and leads to black spotting. In the solid-wall terraces common across the Potteries and Cheshire, that can make a chilly room noticeably more comfortable.
It is worth being straight about what it does not do. Dry lining tackles cold-surface condensation, not rising damp or a leak coming through the wall. Those causes have to be dealt with first, and Rigby’s will say so rather than board over a live problem.
How the job runs
The wall is assessed and the system chosen, direct-fixed to sound masonry or set on a metal or timber frame where insulation depth or hidden services call for it. Boards are cut around openings and fixed level, then joints are taped and filled, or skimmed over for a smoother finish where that is preferred. Reveals and corners are worked in so the room reads clean and square.

Dry Lining: common questions
What is dry lining and how is it different from wet plastering?
Dry lining fixes plasterboard and finishes the joints with tape and jointing compound rather than a wet plaster skim over the whole surface. It brings very little water into the room, so it dries faster and lets decorating start sooner.
Does dry lining make a room warmer?
It can. Insulated or thermal plasterboard has a backing of insulation bonded to it, so lining a cold external wall adds a layer of warmth, holds heat in the room and helps cut the condensation that forms on cold surfaces.
Can dry lining help with a cold, damp-feeling wall?
Where the problem is condensation on a cold external wall, insulated dry lining lifts the surface temperature so moisture is far less likely to settle. It is not a fix for rising damp or a leak, which need sorting at the source first.
Is dry lining faster than traditional plastering?
Usually yes. Because the joints are taped and filled rather than the whole wall skimmed wet, there is far less drying time. That makes it a good route when a room needs to be back in use quickly with minimal mess.
Do you use a metal frame or fix straight to the wall?
Both are options. Boards can be fixed direct to a sound masonry wall, or set on a metal or timber frame where services need running behind, where insulation depth is wanted, or where the existing wall is too far out to dab.
Can the joints be skimmed instead of taped?
Yes. A dry lined wall can be taped and filled ready to decorate, or given a thin skim over the whole surface for a smoother, more uniform finish. Which one suits depends on the look you want and the budget.
