Stone is a Staffordshire market town with a long spine of older property running through it, and a growing edge of new homes to the west. Along the Trent and Mersey Canal and around the High Street you find Georgian and Victorian buildings, solid-walled and often decades past their last proper repair. Those walls behave differently from modern brick and block. A hard cement render trapped over a breathing wall can blow and crack, so older elevations are better served by a compatible, breathable finish that lets moisture move.
Working inside a conservation area
The thing that sets Stone apart is how much of it is protected. The town centre sits in a conservation area, and Stafford Borough Council has Article 4 directions in place that remove some permitted-development rights, particularly on elevations facing highways, waterways or open space.
