Damaged wall plaster does not fix itself, and left alone a small crack or blown patch tends to spread. Rigby’s Plastering carries out plaster repairs across Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire and Cheshire, cutting out the damage and matching the repair back into the wall so it disappears once it is decorated.

The wall problems we sort

Most repairs come down to a handful of familiar faults. Cracks that keep opening up around doors, windows or along a ceiling line. Plaster that has blown away from the wall and sounds hollow when you tap it. Old artex you want gone. Crumbling, salty plaster left behind after a damp problem. And rough, patched-up walls from past repairs that were never blended in. Each of these is dealt with by getting back to a sound background first, rather than skimming over trouble and hoping.

Matching the repair in

A repair is only a success if you cannot find it afterwards. Loose or damaged plaster is cut back to firm material, the exposed background is prepared so the new plaster grips, and the patch is built up and worked flush with the wall around it. The edges are feathered in so there is no ridge or step to catch the light. Where a wall is too far gone to patch cleanly, skimming the whole face is often the tidier answer, and that is said plainly at the quote rather than after the work has started.

Damp, artex and older walls

After damp has been traced and stopped, and the wall given time to dry, salt-contaminated plaster is removed and the wall made good and replastered so the surface is sound again. Artex is taken back or skimmed over to leave a smooth, modern finish. In the Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Stoke-on-Trent, older walls often need a patient hand and a bit of judgement, and nearly a decade of doing this work is what informs the approach.

Dust is kept down, debris is cleared and the room is left ready for you to decorate. Rigby’s gives free quotes and a straight view on whether a patch or a full wall is the honest fix. Ceilings are covered on their own separate page.

Questions

Plaster Repairs: common questions

My wall plaster has blown and sounds hollow. Can it be repaired?

Yes. Blown plaster has lost its grip on the wall behind, so the loose material is cut back to something sound, the background is prepared, and fresh plaster is built back up and finished flush with the wall around it.

Do you patch small areas or does the whole wall need doing?

Small areas can be patched and blended in where the rest of the wall is sound. Sometimes a whole wall is skimmed instead so there is no visible line, and that call is made honestly on the day based on the state of the plaster.

Can you remove artex from a wall?

Yes. Old artex is either taken back or, more often, skimmed over with a fresh flat plaster coat to leave a smooth wall ready to decorate. Which route suits depends on how thick and sound the existing artex is.

Do you replaster walls after damp has been treated?

Yes, once the cause of the damp is fixed and the wall has been given time to dry. Salt-damaged, crumbling plaster is hacked off and the wall made good and replastered so it is sound and ready to decorate again.

Why does plaster crack, and will the repair crack again?

Cracks come from movement, old age, damp or a poor previous repair. The aim is to find why it went, cut back to firm plaster and repair it properly, so a fresh crack is far less likely to open in the same place.

Will a repair match the rest of the wall?

That is the whole point of the work. The patch is worked flush and feathered into the surrounding surface so that once it is decorated you should not be able to pick out where the repair was done.
