Silicone, monocouche or pebbledash: which render is right for your house?

Testimonials

Don't just take our word for it. Read what customers say.

Nearly every job we take on comes from a recommendation or a returning customer. These reviews were left by homeowners across Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Crewe and Stafford, after we had packed up and left the house clean.

Rendering does two jobs at once: it protects the outside of your house from the weather, and it changes how the whole property looks. There is no single best render. The right one depends on your walls, how exposed the house is, and the finish you are after. Here is how the main options compare.

Silicone render

Silicone (thin-coat) render is the modern favourite, and for good reason. The colour runs all the way through, so there is no repainting every few years, and the surface sheds water while still letting the wall breathe. It also flexes a little with the building, which helps it resist hairline cracking. It suits most modern and refurbished homes, and it earns its keep on exposed elevations, the kind you get on the moorland edge around Biddulph and Leek, where weather is the deciding factor.

Monocouche render

Monocouche is a through-colour render applied in a single coat and then scraped back to reveal an even texture. It gives a clean, traditional look without painting, and it is hard-wearing. It is a common choice on new build and larger elevations. It is less flexible than silicone, so the backing wall and the detailing around openings matter a lot to how well it lasts.

Pebbledash

Pebbledash is the traditional finish you see on a lot of older Staffordshire and Cheshire homes: a render coat with small stones thrown onto it. It is tough and hides imperfections well, and sometimes the job is simply matching new dashing into an existing elevation after a repair or an extension, so the house still reads as one. It is a different look to the smooth renders, and whether it suits comes down to taste and the street you are on.

So which one?

  • Want a smooth, low-maintenance, colour-through finish on an exposed house? Silicone is usually the answer.
  • Want a durable single-coat finish, often on newer or larger walls? Monocouche is worth looking at.
  • Matching an existing traditional elevation, or after a like-for-like repair? Pebbledash keeps it consistent.

The wall underneath matters as much as the render on top. Old, damp or uneven walls need the right preparation first, or no finish will last. If you tell us the property and what you are trying to achieve, we will recommend the system that actually fits rather than the one that is easiest to quote.
